MEMPHIS, April 1, 2017 (WTBS) — Successful fast food restaurant, In-N-Out Burgers, has finalized expansion plans for the Mid-South. The burger chain chose their first Memphis location after considering the market several times, said Thomas Hamilton, vice president of In-N-Out, at a panel discussion on the Memphis University District real estate market Tuesday. Teaming up with Tiger Bookstore by the University of Memphis, Memphians will soon be able to browse Memphis Tigers apparel and gifts while waiting on their “Double-Double Animal Style”.
Developers have drawn up plans adding a second and third level to the Walker Avenue location. The second level will serve as the main fast food dining area while the third story will have three full bars, patio seating, a live music area, and an IMAX movie screen for watching the Tigers play on game day. Diners can shop the selection of Memphis gear on the touch screen tables, place an order, and it will be available for pick up after their meal.
“What Memphis doesn’t have is enough burger joints. And everyone knows there’s only ONE place to go for Tiger gear.” said Memphis native Jamie Atkins. “In-N-Out and Tiger Bookstore together?? I think I’ve died and gone to heaven!” Local foodies and Tiger fans alike are excited about the collaboration.
“We are beyond thrilled!” said Tiger Bookstore COO, Kristy Jeffords. “We’re even unveiling a new company culture program for our employees. Our team will be able to eat free anytime and take extended breaks in the bar area so they don’t miss any of the big-screen action on game day.”
“The University District (UD) renaissance will be like nothing you’ve ever seen. People will travel for miles to experience our shopping and entertainment district on Highland Strip and surrounding the college,” said TK Buchanan, President of the UD Business Association. We’re currently in talks with Google about a branded internet café. And we are finally moving forward on a state-of -the-art, world-class sports arena ON CAMPUS!”
With a record-breaking population flux into the UD, In-N-Out, among other retailers, hopes to capitalize on the robust millennial market. Founded in 1948, the restaurant has established a cult following among food fanatics on the west coast and hope to keep that momentum going in the Mid-South.
“Our partnership with Tiger Bookstore will be a perfect match. They are a locally owned store and have been around for over 50 years. We love the Memphis Tigers and look forward hosting a huge celebration when the football team wins it all this year!” said John Blakenship, Marketing Manager at In-N-Out corporate. “Look! I’m wearing my Memphis Tigers Nike Dri-FIT polo from the off campus bookstore right now.”
Construction is set to begin in May with opening scheduled June 31. Students and fans inconvenienced by the build-out will receive a voucher for $2000 to use towards textbooks and Tiger gear. Vouchers will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning at 10 a.m., April 31st at Tiger Bookstore.
